Committee formed to formulate policies to control OTT platform
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has formed a committee to formulate draft policies to control various online platforms on prevention of obscenity and revenue collection from over-the-top (OTT) mediums like Hoichoi, Netflix, Amazon, BangaBD and so on.
BTRC Commissioner (LL) Abu Syed Diljar Hossain has been made the convener and one of the deputy directors (law) has been made the member secretary of the six-member committee.
They are the Director General (SS) of BTRC, Director (Law), Director (SS), an appropriate representative of the Ministry of Information (not below the Deputy Secretary), a representative of the Department of Finance, Accounts and Revenue (not below the Deputy Director) and A legal consultant at BTRC.
Barrister Reza-e Rakib presented the information on behalf of the BTRC in a High Court bench comprising Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Rajik Al Jalil on Tuesday (September 7).
On June 14 last year, lawyer Tanvir Ahmed issued a legal notice to those concerned to remove the controversial part of the Bangladeshi web series. However, he did not respond to the notice and filed a writ petition in the High Court on July 12 of the same year.
On January 18, the High Court directed to formulate a draft policy on OTT platform control. The committee was asked to be drafted and submitted to the High Court within three months. The BTRC chairman and information ministry secretary were asked to prepare the draft.
The court has fixed November 1 for the next order of the case after submitting the report to the court today.
